Dandelion Root: Your New Favorite Coffee Alternative
Jun 09, 2025
In our current climate of economic uncertainty, I’ve been thinking a lot about free, accessible herbalism. The roots of this practice lie in a time when people lived in closer relationship with the Earth—before massive wealth gaps, before the commodification of health, before we became so distanced from the plants growing at our feet. We evolved alongside these healing herbs, and the knowledge of their usefulness runs deep in our ancestral veins.
When I started reflecting on the most abundant and approachable herbs, dandelion was the first that came to mind. This tenacious little weed—lamented by many a lawn and landscaping enthusiast—has an inspiring ability to float its seeds on the wind and root itself wherever it lands. There’s a quiet wisdom in that kind of resilience and adaptability. A lesson, even.
Dandelion is an herb you can likely find within a few blocks of where you live. That said, always take time to scout your harvest area and ensure it hasn’t been sprayed or exposed to herbicides—dandelion’s persistence has made it a prime target for chemical control. But if you can find a clean patch, this humble root is waiting to nourish you—body and spirit.
So, what dandelion remedy is my personal favorite? If you're searching for a cozy, nourishing beverage that supports your body and satisfies your senses, I'd like you to meet one of my morning beverage besties: roasted dandelion root.
For generations across Europe and the Americas, this earthy, caramel-like root has been brewed as a gentle digestive tonic and coffee substitute. Rich in prebiotic inulin, roasted dandelion root supports gut health, liver function, and a grounded morning ritual—without the caffeine jitters.
It all started with a simple social media post: Four Ways to Identify True Dandelion. Then I remembered the Fifth (and most fun) Way to Identify Dandelion. From there, I thought about how roasted dandelion root is one of my absolute favorite morning beverages. So I made a video about that.
And then, like the dandelion itself, the project took root and kept growing—until I found myself putting together an entire e-book.
